2019 MET Gala: Winnie Harlow

Victoria's Secret runway model (2018) and America’s Next Top Model finalist (2014), Winnie Harlow, represents the widening of acceptance of non-standard beauty in the fashion world of modeling. Never before has a model with vitiligo, a rare skin disorder, been accepted and catapulted to such high levels of modeling success. She truly represents a shift in the fashion industry; a shift that is beginning to boldly embrace difference as uniqueness of beauty.

I do not normally blog about gossip ... but in this case, since it is dealing with the fashion industry and Victoria's Secret mega-model Tyra Banks, I have got to include video clips from "The Real" who covers the scoop thoroughly.

Winnie Harlow has quite an extensive modeling portfolio after becoming a finalist on Tyra Banks' reality show although she has stated otherwise. Nonethless, she now has celebrity status and recognition in the most elite circles of the fashion world. Her multitude of fans and eager fashion reporters await her to walk down the red carpet at many celebrity events. She has walked down the red carpet at the MET Gala before in 2018 but never in the way that she did for the 2019 event held earlier this year. She was truly a show stopper!

When she stepped out at the MET Gala held in New York earlier this year, she exuded the confidence of a goddess as she strutted down the red carpet with a custom-designed Tommy Hilfiger gown perfectly fitted across her lean physique dripping in exquisite Chopard jewelry. She chose to show her interpretation of the gala's "camp" theme by also showing her Jamaican ancestry with a carnival queen look. Yes, darling, gemstone-clad headpiece and all!

She cleverly wore an outfit to the after-party comprised of a seemingly lingerie-inspired sheer, leopard-print bodysuit with matching corset and sexy thigh-high boots. This look proved to be a very harmonious transition look from gala to after-party. I love the fact that the two outfits seemed to have been considered as offsets of one another. Her stylist, Anna Trevelyan (Instagram :: annatrevelyan), surely deserves a mentioning here because Winnie Harlow stepped out looking top notch and oh, so stylish!

MET Gala 2017: Adriana Lima

The annual MET Gala is always a much talked-about event in the fashion industry. It is held every year in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City to mark the grand opening of the museum’s annual themed fashion event. This year’s theme was "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between" which brought much attention to the fashion design house of Comme des Garcons.

Comme des Garçons, in French means "like boys," is a Japanese fashion label founded by and headed by Rei Kawakubo. Comme des Garçons is based in Tokyo and also in the prestigious Place Vendôme in Paris. Beginning in May 2017, Rei Kawakubo was the subject of one of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's fashion exhibitions in New York. The Metropolitan Museum in New York's exhibition dedicated to Kawakubo was scheduled for the 2017 season from May 2017 through September 2017.

Adriana Lima looked absolutely gorgeous in a custom bodysuit and skirt made by Alberta Ferretti. She was not the only Victoria’s Secret angel in attendance at this year’s event. Gathered together for a photo were some of the other Victoria's Secret lingerie models: Doutzen Kroes, Candice Swanepoel, Joan Smalls and Behati Prinsloo. In comparison to the other megal models, Adriana Lima truly stood out as perhaps the most elegant and sophisticated overall. Just love those Giuseppe Zanotti sandal heels that she chose to rock with the black satin-like, thigh-high slitted skirt. She added just the right touch with a pair of stylish Chopard earrings.

Yes, a true fashion diva!

MET Gala 2012: Chanel Iman

When American model Chanel Iman showed up on the 2012 MET Gala red carpet not only on the arm of American designer Tom Ford as his "supermodel date" but also adorned in one of his gowns, she caused (or shall I say the gown caused) quite a stir! The gorgeous pheasant feather moire tulle evening gown hugged the delicate curves of Chanel Iman's body and stood out as a piece of fashion art.

Every year, MET (The Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute in New York City) holds an elite fundraiser and fashion exhibit all centered around a particular theme. For the 2012 MET Gala held on May 7th, the theme was "Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations." This theme gave tribute and respectful honor to two female designers who shared some similarities in views and design. Obviously, male designer Tom Ford wanted to stir up some impossible conversations of his own by adorning Chanel Iman in a gown that seemed to give honor to two different fabrics with varying textures elegantly showcasing the curvature of the female body.

This sheer, low-cut, high-slit sexy feather gown first appeared in his 2012 Autumn/Winter Ready-to-Wear Womenswear Collection modeled by Iris Strubegger in a fashion video released in March 2012.

After Chanel Iman stepped out in this pheasant feather dress in May 2012 at the MET Gala, the dress was modeled by Anja Rubik in the August 2012 issue of Harper's Bazaar (US) as well as modeled by Guinevere van Seenus in the September 2012 issue of Harper's Bazaar (Spain) AND modeled by music talent Miley Cyrus in the September 2012 issue of Marie Claire (US). Yes, yes ... Tom Ford ... uhhh, he gets it right!

MET Gala 2013: Joan Smalls

I am not sure why most of the Victoria's Secret models who were in attendance at this year's MET Gala wore similar hairstyles. The lovely Joan Smalls did her own take on Chanel Iman's and Miranda Kerr's hairstyle by incorporating an elegant twist along the left side while letting her soft ombre medium brown to blonde hair cascade over her right shoulder.

This Puerto Rican goddess was escorted by the handsome designer Tom Ford wearing one his latest creations. Her only punk accessory were gold razor blade earrings that looked elegant and stunning on her. The Tom Ford black sort of macrame gown that she wore was see-through and draped her body in a sensual way. She looked ultra sexy especially with Tom Ford standing beside her for the event. Her nude color underwear were a clever choice.

At the event, she was photographed chumming it up with another model who has been associated with Victoria's Secret, the edgy Abbey Lee Kershaw. Abbey just exudes punk style without even trying. Nice to capture her in a photograph with Joan at this event since they both have been featured in Chanel advertising campaigns as well as have done work for Victoria's Secret.

This year's MET Gala was truly a success. American designer Tom Ford last year chose Chanel Iman as his date wearing one his designs. And this year he chose another African-American beauty to escort to the popular event wearing one of his designs, the sexy bombshell Joan Smalls! She happens to be at the height of her career and was recently ranked as the #1 model in the world by models.com. Love the fact that Tom Ford so aggressively embraces black models while still holding his position as one of the top designers in the industry. He raises the bar as far as making a true effort to promote diversity in the fashion industry.

Hats off to both Joan Smalls and Tom Ford!
